Majority of the people in India are familiar with the name Film and Television Institute of India. It's also a proud moment for the people of Maharashtra as the location of Film and Television Institute of India is Pune city. Another important fact is that this Film and Television Institute of India is popularly known as FTII. This FTII is popular not only in India but all over the world also. It should be noted that this FTII established in the year 1960, is an autonomous body under the ministry of information and broadcasting of the government of India. It is the appointment committee of cabinet (ACC) of the Government of India who appoints the director of this institute.

We Indians should be proud of the fact that FTII is a member of CILECT, which is an international association of film schools. Apart from this FTII, two institutes from India that got the membership at CILECT are the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute Kolkata (SRFTI) and the Whistling Woods International respectively. Some important persons who showed their talents in the field of films including Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Resul Pookutty, Shatrughan Sinha, Mithun Chakraborty and many others are alumni of FTII. Courses offered in FTII Pune

The courses offered in Pune FTII include
  • 3 year post graduate diploma in film and television with specializations in cinematography, editing, direction and sound recording and sound design.

  • 2 year post graduate diploma in film acting.

  • 2 year post graduate diploma in art direction and production design.

  • 1 year post graduate certificate course in television with specializations in video editing, sound recording and TV engineering, TV direction, electronic cinematography and video editing.

  • 1 year post graduate certificate course in feature film screen play writing.

  • 1 year certificate course in animation and computer graphics.

  • 12 weeks course in TV production and technical operations for DD staff.

Apart from this, there are FTII short courses like videography course and documentary production for DD staff, digital graphics course for TV production, courses like basic videography, advance videography and nonlinear editing for outsiders, courses in art direction, audio designing, TV technology and make-up and many more. The FTII highlights include 2 film studio floors(studio 1 & 11 with dimensions 175ft * 80ft and 97ft * 51 ft.), 4 Nos of 35mm cameras and 4 Nos of 16mm cameras), video cameras, HMI lights, steenboks, moviolas, nagras, Harrison audio mixing console, sound studio dubbing with facilities, 2 television studios(studio 1& 11 with dimensions 60ft * 40 ft.* 22 ft. and 50ft * 40 ft.* 22 ft.), full-fledged graphics department, computer laboratory, book library, film and a video library respectively.

Chance for Pune FTII students to direct documentaries / Films Division Mumbai

The FTII students from the 2006 batch will be provided an opportunity by the Films Division (FD) Mumbai and the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), in the form of documentary film making. This opportunity is given to the students of FTII Pune direction department. As a part of this, the films division Mumbai will be providing a fee of Rs 15000 to all candidates on board for the 10 minute documentary. This initiative was materialized after FTII director D J Narain met Films Division (FD) Mumbai director general Bankim Kapadia. The students who are interested in this offer will begin to submit their proposals to FD, after they will begin their work. As a result the students will be given an opportunity to showcase their talents which in turn will be a stepping stone to a big career. The FTTI Pune is also expecting a similar tie up with National Film Development Corporation(NFDC) for their students.
