Soybeans soaked in warm water produces Bowman-Birk Protease Inhibitor (BBI)
Bowman-Birk Protease Inhibitor (BBI) is a protien having a molecular weight of 8000 which inhibits the trypsin and chymotrypsin .They were very effective in suppressing the growth of tumors in various types of cancer. The soybeans contain lots of BBI which should be extracted from soybean. This extracted BBI is called BBI concentrate. Both of BBI and BBI concentrate gives the different suppressing effects on carcinogenesis. The method to extract BBI proteins from soybean is very crucial, time-consuming and involves harsh chemicals.
Indian origin scientist Hari B. Krishnan found a greener and environmentally friendly way of obtaining BBI from the soybean. Japanese people had regularly take diet which include BBI derived from the large amounts of soybeans. Hence there are low cancer mortality rates in Japan as compare to other country. Scientists found that soybean seeds taken in water at 122 Fahrenheit naturally release large amounts of Bowman-Birk Protease Inhibitor which would really help in cancer. These BBI can be easily harvested from the water. The protein taken from water is seen to be active and clinical tests shows that BBI stop breast cancer cells from dividing in vitro analysis.
Incubating the seeds of Soybean in warm water provides a simple and alternative method to isolate Bowman-Birk Protease Inhibitor (BBI) proteins which is promising cancer chemopreventive agent for humans without any toxic effects.
