Maharashtra's first Medico-legal institute to open at Sion Hospital in Mumbai
Sion Hospital or The Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Hospital is about to open one of its kind, Maharashtra's first Medico-legal institute. This institute would be opened shortly within the hospital's premises. It would be a first of its kind facility in Maharashtra state, though one such facility already exists in Madhya Pradesh State. So this makes the facility, India's second such facility. This medico-legal institute will be set up within an area of 48000 sq.ft. The construction work has already begun and may open up this Diwali 2011. Presently only research laboratories would be set up in this facility, but within no time the institute will also be functional. This one of its kind facility will allow the medical professional of this hospital to work on each subject with actual co-ordination within other departments.
This institute will be a three story building with many departments including Anthropology, Forensic Soil archaeology, forensic psychiatry, forensic odontology, entomology, toxicology and age clinic. Once the institute starts up, the Sion Hospital plans to buy all the expensive machinery that may be required to support this kind of work within the departments.
