Ajanta and Ellora Caves
The Ajanta and Ellora Caves in Aurangabad district from part of the proud culture heritage of India. The creation of the Ajanta caves and the world famous wall paintings there date back to the period from 200 B.C. to 800 A.D. , a period of nearly 1000 years. The Ajanta caves were in oblivion for quite a long time. They were discovered accidentally in 1819 in the thick undergrowth. When excavated , 29 caves were found in good condition.
The marvel about the caves is that they were hew by just hammer and chisel from a single rock ,as better implements were not known in those days. The wall paintings depicts men and women wearing different garments in typical attitudes and making a variety a gesture. In every cave there is an inner temple in which you will find a huge stone sculpture of Lord Buddha.
