Major towns in Satara District are Karad, Wai, Koregaon, Paltan, Rahimatpur, Koyananagar, Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar also. Pune, Sangli, Solapur, Kolhapur and Satara come under the Pune Administrative area. Satara surrounded by Pune on the north, Solapur on east, Sangli on South, Ratnagiri on West, Raigad on north-west. On the north and south, western edge of the Satara Western Ghat's main range runs. Western range is also called Sahyadri range. From this Ghat Satara separating from Ratnagiri district. 11 talukas comes under the Satara district namely Wai, Mahabaleshwar, Phaltan, Man, Patan, Khatav, Koregaon, Karad, Satara, Khandala and Jaoli. One of the oldest residential school in Satara is "Sainik School" where boys are come for preparing career.

Ajinkyatara Fort:

One of the historical fort in Satara District is Ajinkyatara Fort. This fort build in the memory of the Martyr's of 1857 freedom movement.


In the Chhtrpati Shivaji's period this Sajjangad was spiritual Capital while the Raigad was capital. This fort is only 9 kilometers apart from the Satara city. On this fort Samarth Ramdas who was the guru (teacher) of Shivaji Maharaj took Samadhi.

Koyna Dam:

On the Koyna River largest dam in Maharashtra built which is Koyna Dam. In 1963 dam was completed. Total capacity of this dam is 98.78 TMC. On this dam Hydroelectric project of 1920 MW located. 98 kilometer apart from the Satara Koyna dam situated. Best and beautiful picnic spot in Satara is the Koyna Dam.

Kanher Dam:.

On Venna river Kanher Dam was built in 1986. Capacity of this dam is 10.10 TMC. Here hydroelectric project of 4MW. Kanher Dam is 8 kilometers from the Satara City.

Dhom Dam:

In 1978 this dam was built on Krishna River. Nearly 13.50 TMC capacity. On the Dhom Dam hydroelectric project also located from this project capacity is 2MW This Dam is nearly 9 kilometers away from the Wai.


Well-known historical temple of "Swyambhu Ganesh" which is placed on1 kilometer from old Satara-Kolhapur road.


33 kilometers away from the Satara, Wai is situated. In this Wai famous temples temple of "Maha Ganpati" is located. Many holy men and women from all over Maharashtra come for worshipped. Therefore is important center in Maharashtra as a Pilgrim and Cultural.

Karad-Priti Sangam:

Karad City is placed on the meeting of Krishna and Koyna River. On the banks of river Krishna near the confluence means meeting there is Samadhi of Late Yeshvantrao Chavan who was the Dy. Prime Minister of India. Krishnamai Temple, high minarets and some places are famous which are located near the Karad.

Kas Talav (Lake):

In the 1844 this lake was build. Nearly height of this lake is 3500 feet. This lake is the main drinking water supply source for Satara City. Kas Talav is nearly 22 kilometers away from the Satara.
