2010-2011 Christmas Special : First Christmas Card


In 1843, Artist John Calcott Horsley designed first Christmas card at the behest of his friend Henry Cole who was civil servant. First recorded mass production of Christmas card which were based on Cole priented a thousand cards. The card depicted three hand-painted planels, actually size is 13x8 cm. The central panel of this card is a fmily enjoying Christmas festivities. From this either side of panels showed that people are doing good deed- clothing the naked and feeding the hungry. The message from card is - "A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year To You".

In 1840's England's Queen Victoria began the tradition of sending offical Christmas cards. The British royal family continues to send these cards. The world's first greeting card whcich is original print was brought by Horsley for pricely sum of Rs 16 Lakhs in 2001.
