My Idea Of A Happy Life
Happy is the man whose wish and care,
A few paternal acres bound;
Content to breathe his native air
In his own ground.
Truly, if a man ,according to Alexander Pope, had a few acres of land inherited from his forefathers , and had the skill and will to manage his basic needs from that land ,he would ,indeed ,have been truly happy. He would not have to endure the rush and crush of daily existence. He would not be tempted by the TV or advertisements or hoardings to acquire things that he never really needed in the first place. In his field or farms , he would tend his flock, till the land and get sufficient food and clothing all the year round. He would live a peaceful life, breathing the pure countryside air and enjoying the bliss of simple family life.
That indeed would be my idea of a happy life. A life of peaceful existence amidst nature and all its glories. No worries of saving crores or evading the taxman . Peaceful sleep at night and busy toil by day. Living a life close to nature. Exploring the land around and vast diversity of flora and fauna that existed there. Being fascinated by mysterious habits of the snails and the mynahs and the dragonflies. Following the season and trying to enjoy their different moods.
In fact, if my field or farm were next to a lake or river or sea, that would be even more glorious. To sail in peaceful harmony with the wind. To spend hours catching fish. Or just lying on the grass by the water and hearing the gentle lap of the smooth sailing water.
Like Robert Louis Stevenson I would sleep o my 'bed in the bush with stars to see' and eat 'bread I dip in the river '. It would be heavenly to be miles away from the rush and crush of the grimy and sweaty city life. Who needs to sweat and labour for tons of money, when the price that one has to pay for it is peace of mind ! My idea of happy life is that of one in the countryside , the simplest possible life, with the least possible money but the greatest gift of all that one can have close communion with Gods creations and His blessings for a long and peaceful life!
