Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan will soon be taking oath of office to lead the State Government. Now the interesting question is: who will become the new Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra?
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Candidates
The post of Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister will be occupied by a member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). NCP Party Chief Sharad Pawar will decide by today afternoon whether to retain Chhagan Bhujbal as deputy CM or to replace him with his nephew Ajit Pawar.
The NCP presently has 3 ministers in the Union Cabinet: Sharad Pawar (Agriculture Minister); Praful Patel (Minister for Civil Aviation); and Agatha Sangma (Minister of State for rural development). Chhagan Bhujbal has repeatedly taken a stand in the past that he wishes to remain at the State level only and not move to national politics.
In fact, after the 2009 Assembly Elections, everybody was surprised and shocked that Bhujbal was made the Maharashtra Deputy CM rather than Ajit Pawar. Apparently, the party did not want to project favouritism towards Marathas alone and hence had chosen Bhujbal over Ajit Pawar. At that time, nearly 40 legislators had openly demanded that Ajit Pawar should be made Deputy CM and Ajit Pawar himself had threatened to rebel. They all were later assured that Ajit Pawar would get an opportunity mid-term.
Has that opportunity come knocking? Perhaps not. It was just last week that Sharad Pawar had emphatically stated that if Ashok Chavan stepped down from the CM's post, then there would be no change in the post of Deputy CM.
