Vajreshwari Temple main
Vajreshwari has been mentioned as Vadvali in the ancient Puranas, according to which Lord Vishnu had visited this site when he had adorned the most famous Avatar,Parshurama. According to these legendary tales, Parshuram had performed a yagna, which still maintains its residue in form of the volcanic ash on the Mandakini Hills. Goddess Vajreshwari is said to be the avatar of Goddess Parvati, who was requested to adorn this avatar for slaying the demon, Kalikala. Kalikala as per Hindu Mythology was a demon who around thousands of years ago lived in the nearby forests and would trouble all the sages and the rishimunis living nearby.

Goddess Vajreshwari

Worried and annoyed rishis performed the TriChandi Yagna to please the Goddess Parvati. Lord Indra who was angry with the fact that he was not the one the rishis ask help for, hurled his most dangerous weapon Vajra at the yagna. Scared the rishis and the gods prayed to Goddess Parvati for help, who swallowed the Vajra and pacified Lord Indra. Thus she was called as Vajreshwari and a temple of hers was established in this area.

The actual temple of Goddess Vajreshwari was earlier at Gunj around 8 km from Vajreshwari. However this temple was destroyed by the Portuguese during their reign. Once Chimaji Appa, younger brother of Peshwa Baji Rao I passed thorugh this area, and set a camp right here during his fight with the Portuguese for the Bassein Fort in Vasai. Chimaji Appa had failed to conquer that fort he was fighting for the last 3 years. Finally he prayed to the Goddess Vajreshwari and it seems she blessed him. After conquering the fort successfully, Chimaji Appa built this new temple. The temple architecture resembles to that of the Bassein Fort.
