The Unique Identification Authority of India, headed by Nandan Nilekani, is an authority set up by the Government for creating and establishing an identity related resident database, maintain it and updating it on an ongoing basis Aadhaar is a number issued by the UIDAI to all residents which would carry a 12 digit unique number. The number to be stored in a centralized data base besides having basic information such as photograph, ten fingerprints, iris of each individual would be easily verifiable avoiding duplicates. Over a period of time, Aadhaar will be recognized and accepted across the country for all service providers. Based on this the Registrars and Agencies can make use of it for their identity based applications. Aadhar will spare the service providers the task of checking the documents and duplicating the procedure for "Know Your Customer" is avoided. Residents also would be spared repeatedly providing the documents for opening bank account, passport or driving license, Ration Card. The Centralized database of the UIDAI would be 24 x 7, any time and anywhere authentication. Indeed UIDAI Project is a highly ambitious Project and will revolutionize the whole archaic practices.
