The Shri Mahalakshmi Temple in Kolhapur


The four Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra are Tuljapur enshrining Bhavani, Kolhapur enshrining Mahalakshmi, Mahur ensurining Mahamaya Renuka and Saptshringi ensuring Jagadmba . Other Shakti temples in the state are those at AmbeJogai and Aundh.

The Shri Mahalakshimi Temple of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India is one of the shakti Peethas listed in various purans of Hinduism. A shakti Peetha is a place associated with Shakti , the goddess of power. The temple takes its name from Mahalakshmi, the consort os Vishnu and its belived that divine couple reside in the area.

The temple belongs architecturally to the Kannada Chalukya empire and may have been first buit in 700AD. Mounted on a stone platform, the image of the four armed and crowned goddess is made of gemstonf & weighs about 40 kilograms , The image of the Mahalakshimi carved in black stone is 3feet in hight.

The Shri Yantra is curved on one of the walls in the temple. A stone lion, the vahana of the goddess, stands behind the statue. The crown contains an image of the sheshang the serpent of Vishnu. In her four hands, the deity of Mahalasksimi holds objects of symbolic value. The lower right hand holds a mhalunga(a citrus fruit) in the upper right, a large mace (kaumodala) with its head touching. The ground , in the upper left a shield, and in the lower left, a bowl. Unlike most Hindu sacred images which face north or east, the image of this deity looks west (Pashchim). There is a small open window on the western wall, through which the light of the setting sun falls on the face of the image for three day around 21st of each march and september.

There are a number of other shries in the counrtyard to the Navagrahas , surya, Mahishasuramardhini, Vittal-Rakhmai, Shiva, Vishnu, Tulja Bhavani and others.

Worship Structure:-


Five worship services are offered each day. These are as follows:-

1.The first one is at 5am, and it involves the waking of the deity with a kakad-tourch, to the accompaniment of hymns.

2.The second worship service at 8.00am involves the offering of the shodashopachara pooja consisting of 16 element.

3.The afternoon.

4.The evening.

5.And the Shejarati pooja constitute of the three other services.

Special Events:-



A festival image of the deity is taken out in procession around the temple counrtyard each friday and on full noon days.

Kolhapur is located in Kolhapur district and is well connected with Pune 240 kilometers north. It is on the National Highway between Bangalore and Pune. It is situated on the banks of the Panchganga river and is full of ancient temples and shrines.

By Air:-
Mumbai and Pune are well connected by domestic and international airlines. One can either take a train or bus to reach Kolhapur from Mumbai & Pune.

By Rail:-
Kolhapur in nearnest railway station (5 kilometers away) there are regular trains from mumbai to kolhapur.

By Road:-
Kolhapur is nearby 400 kilometers from Mumbai, 240 kilometers from Pune, Kolhapur lies on the NH4 between Banglore and Pune.

Also called "Pushkareshwar Teerth". It is about 4 kilometers from Mahalaksimi Temple.

2.The Joytiba Temple:-
The Joytiba Temple is said to be built in 1730 by Navajisaya Jaytiba and is located 17 kilometers from Kolhapur.

3.Narasimba wadi:-
Situated on the confluence of the rivers Krishna and Panchaganga. It is well known for the holy padukas or slippers of Dattaguru. It is located 45 kilometers from Kolhapur.

4.Panhala:-
Panhala 20 kilometers from Kolhapur- a popular hill station.

5.Vishalgad:-
Vishalgad fort located 18km south from Kolhapur is deeply rooted in maratha history.
