Diabetes - At different age groups


Adolescent years [From 10 to 17 years]


Diabetes in young children either results due to genetic or environmental factors such as lack of exercising which also leads to obesity.

Precautions : To indulge in outdoor activities like swimming, running and playing tennis and follow a healthy diet plan.

Reproductive years [From 18 to 44 years]


Usually suffer from gestational diabetes. It develops during pregnancy and disappears after it is over. It not only affects the mother but the unborn child as well.

Precautions : Maintaining oral hygiene to prevent growth of bacteria, regular blood, urine check-up and monthly weight check ups. Avoid walking bare-foot and keep away from alcohol.

Old Age [After 45 years]


Prone to heart attacks and cancer as the body gradually loses the ability to process blood sugar, leading up to the level at which it can damage organs.

Precautions : Avoid sweets completely, fried and fatty foods should be minimized. Increase the intake of fibre rich foods. Avoid stress and do regular exercise, stop smoking.

Home remedies to control Diabetes


  • Eat fibre rich food like apple, figs, guava, lemon and orange. Grains rich in fibres are barely, oatmeal, maize, wheat flour, bajra, whole wheat, rice flakes, refined wheat flour [without husk] and puffed rice

  • Garlic is another natural herbal remedy for diabetes as it contains allicin

  • Take some mango leaves and soak them in water overnight. Have this drink empty stomach in the morning

  • Chew 8-10 curry leaves in an empty stomach. Effective in bringing sugar level in urine and blood to normal
