Plotemy, a Geographical worker who researched on the origins on Bombay, gave the information that, the native inhabitants of Mumbai were the Kolis and Agris who ruled the seven or so islands.

From 150 A.D. till 1345 A.D., the Kolis and Agris ruled the islands of Bombay with unbounded sway until after which the Islamic Rules invaded India in 1534 and conquered some of the Islands.

THen after, a Muslim Ruler from Gujarat took control over all the islands of Bombay, which again later were taken up by the Portuguese. 1661 A.D. marked the marriage of King Charles II with Portuguese princess Infanta Catherine and Bombay was handed over to the Britishers as a part of Royal Dowry.

The Island then remained as a part of the British Presidency and British Empire till the independence of India on 15th August 1947.

Bombay then became the capital city for the Bombay Presidency and then the State of Bombay and then also remained the capital city after the separation of Gujarat and some part of Karnataka leading to the formation of Maharashtra.
