Maharashtra Gram Panchayats are the Local Maharashtra Government and which are the bodies at village level. Gram Panchayats are the foundation of the Panchayat Samiti (System). The Gram Panchayat is the base of a village which set up the villages with a population of more than five hundred. If two or more than villages have less than five hundred population, then there is a common Gram Panchayat system for those villages, which is is called as Group-Gram Panchayat.

Election of Gram Panchayat:- member of the gram panchayat are elected direct;y by the village people on the basis of adult member i.e. franchise by the Gram Sabha, which comprises the adult mass of the village. The elected member of Maharashtra Gram Panchayat retains for next Five years in the service of Gra Panchayat.

Eligibility for Election of Gram Panchayat 2011:- A candidate, who are interested for Maharashtra Gram Panchayat Election 2010 must be 21 years old. The minimum number of members elected is 7 and the maximum is 17.

Head of the Gram Panchayat
The Sarpanch or Chairperson is the head of the Gram Panchayat.

The elected person i.e. member of the Gram Panchayat who are elected by the people of village retains as a Sarpanch and a Deputy Sarpanch for a term of five years. Most of places the panchayat president is directly elected by village people.

The main role of the Sarpanch meetings of the Gram Panchayat and supervises it’s working. Sarpanch implements the village development schemes. The Deputy Sarpanch, who has the power to make his own decisions, assists the Sarpanch in his work.
