    About the Institute
    The Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE),Mumbai is a deemed university under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi .The CIFE has been rendering yeoman service in fisheries education and training since its inception in 1961. The Institute’s headquarters is located at Mumbai and has four regional centres located in different parts of the country. The Institute imparts post graduate education in all major disciplines of fisheries and offers training and consultancies in fisheries and related disciplines.

    Eligibility for training:
    Aspiring entrepreneurs, professionals, officials, students, researchers and others engaged in fisheries sector, preferably graduates with field experience, can apply.

    Application:
    Application on plain paper in the given format is to be sent at least one month before the start of the programme directly to the concerned Course Directors and for each programme separate applications should be sent. Those candidates who are interested to undergo training at Regional Centres may forward their application directly to the Scientist In Charge of the concerned Centre. In service candidates need to apply through proper channel.

    Intake of candidates : Maximum -20

    Medium of instruction : English and Hindi

    Fees:
    Course fee payment should be made in the form of Demand Draft (DD) drawn in favour of “ICAR Unit ,CIFE, Mumbai” payable at State Bank of India, Mumbai. The demand draft should be submitted along with the application form.

    Boarding and Lodging :
    Accommodation will be provided to outside participants during the period of training. Food will be available in the students managed mess. The boarding and lodging charges will be about Rs.125 (Rupees one hundred and twenty five only) per person per day which are to be borne by the participants. No accompanies are allowed.

    Travel cost:
    Travel cost should be borne by the participants.

    Foreign participants:
    Candidates for the training must be sponsored by the home countries and by the sponsoring organization. Application form with detailed bio data, passport number, travel plan etc to be sent to DDG (Fisheries) ICAR, Krishi Anusandhan Bhavan II, Pusa Road, New Delhi -110 012 with a copy to CIFE, Versova, Mumbai - 61 for information. Training fee will be $ 100 per candidate. On campus stay and food will be about INR 200 (Rupees two hundred only) per person per day. Accommodation will be provided at the campus.     The Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai is a premier institute in fisheries education and
    has been providing post graduate and doctoral education in the frontier and emerging areas of
    fisheries. Since inception, the institute has been imparting different kinds of in-service and demand
    driven short-term training programmes for different clientele groups. Fishers, farmers,
    entrepreneurs, development personnel, and university teachers have been benefited by such courses.
    Why these courses are Different?
    These certificate courses have been designed to impart more intensive knowledge based skill training
    on different aspects of fisheries and aquaculture to produce updated fisheries professionals as well as
    self-propelled and confident entrepreneurs.
    The method of training would be an interactive two-way facilitation process to build upon the existing
    information, knowledge, rich experience and expertise of participants on the existing practices, add
    elements of the recent developments, synthesize, package and deliver the relevant know-how needed.
    Training courses would involve many behavioral skills to facilitate this flow of two way learning process
    from the accumulated field experiences and the emerging areas of knowledge. Accordingly, these
    courses would focus on field exposure and hands-on-training rather than conventional classroom based
    over loading of theoretical lectures. The participants would certainly be refreshed, updated and wellequipped
    with knowledge and skill to confidently harness the opportunities and able to face the
    emerging challenges at their work places and vocations.

    The programme will utilize a variety of pedagogical tools including participative methods through role
    playing, simulation exercises, group discussion, case studies, presentations, participation in field
    activities, do-it-yourself sessions and exposure visits.

    the in-service personnel of Departments of
    Fisheries of various States. The Institute
    came under the administrative control of
    Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR)
    st on 1 April 1979, and was accorded the
    th Deemed-to-be University status on 29 March
    1989. Thus the areas of operation of CIFE
    were widened to include research and
    extension activities as well.
    Spectrum of activities
    CIFE imparts Doctoral, Masters, Diploma and
    Certificate Courses in frontiers areas of
    fisheries sciences. In addition, it also
    conducts basic and applied research,
    demand-driven training programmes and
    provides consultancy in fisheries. CIFE is
    known for its industry relevance and global
    orientation in fisheries sector.
    Infrastructure Facilities
    Learning Resources
    Class rooms equipped with computer and LCD
    projection systems and labs wi th
    sophisticated equipments provide effective
    learning environment. A state-of-the-art
    computer center provides round the clock
    Internet ser v i ce wi th broadband
    connectivity. The Institute has modern
    auditorium, community hall, conference
    hall, three committee rooms that are
    equipped wi th lates t audio-vi sual
    equipments, including video conferencing
    facility for hosting seminars, conferences
    and cultural functions. The institute has two
    fishing vessels namely M.F.V. Saraswati (OAL-
    36.57 m) and M.F.V. Narmada (OAL-11.6 m) to
    support its on-board research and training
    programmes on fishing, navigation,
    oceanography and other such studies.

    CIFE museum (80 sq. m. area) houses a
    fascinating collection of a large variety of
    finfish and shellfish and other aquatic
    animals, mostly collected during Institute's
    cruise programs organized for on-board
    training of students.
    Library
    The Institute's library is identified as the
    “National library for Fisheries and Allied
    Sciences” and has a rich collection of books,
    journals and CD databases such as ASFA,
    PLTOX, Water-lit and Eco-disc etc. The
    library is also equipped with microfilm
    reader, audio-visual facility, computer and
    photocopying facility.

    Fisheries and Aquaculture Extension
    Fisheries extension has a remarkable role to
    play in sustaining natural water bodies and
    fish catch. Aquaculture provides ample scope
    for vertical and horizontal expansion. Today,
    extension education is equipped with
    approaches, strategies, methods and tools to
    face emerging challenges. A few aspiring
    GOs, NGOs, corporate and community
    organizations are equipping themselves with
    such tools. All such lessons experienced by
    them need to be collected and disseminated.
    The emerging issues in fisheries and
    aquaculture extension also need to be
    imparted to empower field functionaries.
    To succeed in thi s mi s s ion, CIFE
    headquarters, Mumbai offers a certificate

    Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai
    Central Institute of Fisheries Education
    (CIFE) was established in 1961 by the
    Government of India under FAO/UNDP
    assistance to impart professional training to
    the in-service personnel of Departments of
    Fisheries of various States. The Institute
    came under the administrative control of
    Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR)
    st on 1 April 1979, and was accorded the
    th Deemed-to-be University status on 29 March
    1989. Thus the areas of operation of CIFE
    were widened to include research and
    extension activities as well.
    Spectrum of activities
    CIFE imparts Doctoral, Masters, Diploma and
    Certificate Courses in frontiers areas of
    fisheries sciences. In addition, it also
    conducts basic and applied research,
    demand-driven training programmes and
    provides consultancy in fisheries. CIFE is
    known for its industry relevance and global
    orientation in fisheries sector.
    Infrastructure Facilities
    Learning Resources
    Class rooms equipped with computer and LCD
    projection systems and labs wi th
    sophisticated equipments provide effective
    learning environment. A state-of-the-art
    computer center provides round the clock
    Internet ser v i ce wi th broadband
    connectivity. The Institute has modern
    auditorium, community hall, conference
    hall, three committee rooms that are
    equipped wi th lates t audio-vi sual
    equipments, including video conferencing
    facility for hosting seminars, conferences
    and cultural functions. The institute has two
    fishing vessels namely M.F.V. Saraswati (OAL-
    36.57 m) and M.F.V. Narmada (OAL-11.6 m) to
    support its on-board research and training
    programmes on fishing, navigation,
    oceanography and other such studies.
    Museum
    CIFE museum (80 sq. m. area) houses a
    fascinating collection of a large variety of
    finfish and shellfish and other aquatic
    animals, mostly collected during Institute's
    cruise programs organized for on-board
    training of students.
    Library
    The Institute's library is identified as the
    “National library for Fisheries and Allied
    Sciences” and has a rich collection of books,
    journals and CD databases such as ASFA,
    PLTOX, Water-lit and Eco-disc etc. The
    library is also equipped with microfilm
    reader, audio-visual facility, computer and
    photocopying facility.
    Accommodation
    CIFE has a well-furnished hostel, modest
    guesthouse and dormitory facilities for its
    students, trainees, visiting faculty and
    guests. The hostel is provided with facilities
    like recreation room having home theatre
    system, and computers with access to
    internet connectivity.

    CIFE Kakinada Centre is one of the nodal
    centres of CIFE imparting training
    programmes on various aspects of
    brackishwater and freshwater aquaculture
    since four decades. The centre has been
    playing a key role in bringing “Blue
    Revolution” in Andhra Pradesh by its
    intensive efforts on HRD and extension
    activities.
    Objectives
    ?To impart field training in brackishwater
    and freshwater aquaculture to the
    trainees of CIFE, Mumbai, its other
    regional centers and to in-service
    personnel, private entrepreneurs,
    farmers etc.
    ?To develop brackishwater and freshwater
    finfish and shell fish farming
    ?To disseminate and popularize the
    brackishwater and freshwater farming
    through extension programmes
    Location
    CIFE Kakinada Centre is located at the brim
    of Kakinada Bay in the Bay of Bengal, the
    Head Quarter of East Godavari district, one
    of the fertile districts of Andhra Pradesh in
    terms of Agriculture as well as Fisheries and
    Aquaculture. It is about 2 kms away from the
    CIFE, Kakinada Centre
    Kakinada Port Railway Station and 5 kms
    away from Kakinada Bus Stand. The nearest
    airports are Rajahmundry (70 km) and
    Visakhapatnam (175 km). Overall climate in
    Kakinada is all-time summer.

    A first creek based Brackish Water Fish Farm
    in A.P. was established in 1968, spread over
    an area of 16 acres with 10 rearing ponds and
    8 grow out ponds at Kakinada.
    Fin fish and Shell fish production is taken up
    every year with special emphasis to develop
    R&D and to conduct on-farm demonstrations
    and hands-on training.
    Freshwater Fish Farm at Balabhadrapuram
    ?This farm is located at equi-distance of 35
    kms between Kakinada and Rajamundry.
    ?Farm is spread over an area of 7 acres with
    30 nursery ponds and 3 stock ponds.
    ?R&D on transgenic fish is a major thrust
    area.
    ?A new model Magur hatchery has been
    established and operated at commercial
    level.

    – Baniyani near Rohtak, Haryana in March,
    1996 to take up research programmes on
    inland saline aquaculture. CIFE Rohtak
    centre, Lahli is located about 15 Kms from
    Rohtak bus stand.

    production of Giant prawn through the
    utilization of the waste land and inland saline
    water.

    ?The total area of the centre with fish farm
    is 36 acres with semi-commercial prawn
    hatchery, multiple hatchery block and wet
    laboratory. The centre has five type I and
    four type II quarters and a guest house,
    office block, laboratories, teaching block
    and hostel etc.
    ?The fish farm was taken over by CIFE
    Rohtak Centre in 1996 from the State
    Fisheries Department, Govt. of Haryana
    on lease basis for 25 years for conducting
    research.
    ?The centre has 4.5 ha farm at Lahli and 10
    ha farm at Baniyani, the former
    representing low saline zone and latter
    high saline zone. The fish farm is equipped
    with re-circulatory flow through pond
    system, filtration units and salt
    evaporation basins.

    CIFE centre Powarkheda is located in
    Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh
    state at NH 69 between Hoshangabad and
    Itarsi towns at a distance of 8 kms from
    both the towns. Itarsi is a major railway
    junction of Central Railway and being
    centrally located, it is well connected to all
    4 metro cities of the country. Powarkheda
    centre is about 85 kms from Bhopal, which
    is having air-connection with Mumbai &

    Infrastructure facilities
    The centre has a well equipped classroom
    and a farm of 21 ha land area with 5.56 ha
    water area (with 35 NP, 7 RP & 1 SP) & 6
    cement cisterns for hands-on-training. It
    has one D-85 hatchery with spawn
    p r o d u c t i o n c a p a c i t y o f 4 0 - 5 0
    lacs/operation. In addition, one Prawn
    hatchery unit, one Magur hatchery unit and
    one well-equipped laboratory are there.
    Hostel: One 14 room single story well
    furnished hostel with intake capacity of 26
    students/trainees & two guests supported
    with kitchen and dining hall. Three
    separate rooms available for 6 girl
    students/trainees.

    Complete application form in given format along with attested copies of relevant certificates
    should be sent to the concerned Officer-in-charge/ Coordinator of the centre where the respective course
    is being offered so as to reach there at least two months before the start of the course.
    In service candidates should apply through proper channel.
    Course fees will be Rs. 15,000 per candidate per course and should be paid in the shape of DD
    drawn in favour of the “Director, CIFE, Mumbai” drawn at Mumbai along with the application form.
    Course fees include Registration fees, training materials and local transport for field visits.
    On campus food and stay will be about Rs. 100/- per person per day and may vary as per the
    location where the course is being organized. Accommodation will be provided on the campus where
    the certificate course is being organized.

    Different methods and techniques like lectures, work group discussions, case studies, field study
    and practical experiences to mention only a few will be employed. There will be immense opportunities
    for participants to play an active role in the learning process. The thrust of course will be on experiential
    sharing and individual reflection across-disciplines.
    Pre evaluation will be conducted to assess the background and basic knowledge of the
    participants on fish culture.
    Examination consisting of one paper each on theory and practical will be conducted.
    CIFE has experienced faculty of global competence and international exposure to conduct
    certificate courses. The institute also has multidisciplinary faculty to enrich the participants on the
    concerned sub-topics.
