Post Graduate Diploma in Foreign Trade (PGDFT)

A Credit Semester Course of Department of Economics, Pune University

Greater understanding of the forces of international trade and finance has become very important since India's adoption of the policies of economic liberalization and globalization and the strong accent on export-led strategy of economic growth. The initiation of W T O in the international trade sector also poses challenges and opportunities for India as a developing country.

An understanding of the forces of international economic, financial and trade relations, institutions and administrative policies and procedures governing them are essential for achieving economic goals and objectives and for proper management of foreign trade. India would have to strive to find global markets for their products and plan imports required in production of export products as well as for technology transfer.

Many industrial units in the country and particularly in and around Pune and Mumbai would require people trained in foreign trade and international finance theory, policies and procedures - at different levels.

The course, 'Post-Graduate Diploma in Foreign Trade', is developed taking into account all these facts. It is a right mix of theoretical rigour and practical aspects of international trade.

Students who complete the course are expected to get employment opportunities in private corporate sector in export-import departments, governmental organizations, and other trade related institutes, companies and financial institutions. The course which commenced in 1994-95 academic year has been very well received and the students have found gainful employment opportunities.

Eligibility and Selection Procedure for Admission

Students who possess a Bachelor's degree in any discipline from University of Pune or any other recognized university with ( in the open category) 55 per cent marks or equivalent grade (B +) will be considered for admission. The cutoff for reserve category candidates is at 50% at graduation level.

An Admission Committee constituted by the Department of Economics administers an admission test. The admission test will comprise a written test (50 marks) and personal interview (50 marks). Applications must be submitted along with attested copies of earlier marks.

Usually, in the month of April the University advertises for the entrance of the course and applications are available online during the month of May. In June every year, the entrance test is conducted and the course commences from the month of July.

Admissions for the course will be determined on the basis of performance in the admission test, not the graduation marks. Admission is strictly according to merit.

The total number of seats is 50. In addition, there are four seats for foreign students; foreign candidates need not appear for the entrance test. The department follows the reservation rules of the university.

The post-graduate diploma programme is a full time diploma of one year duration consisting of two semesters. Each semester will be roughly of 20 weeks duration.
