Shivraj Patil's home town laments bad luck
Syed Rizwanullah, TNN, Jun 16, 2007, 01.33am IST
CHAKUR: Devisingh Shekhawat, husband of Pratibha Patil, said her nomination for the country's top post came as a big surprise. This was the prayer on the lips of villagers of Chakur until Thursday evening as they waited eagerly for confirmation of Union home minister Shivraj Patil Chakurkar's nomination for presidential election.

The enthusiastic emotional build-up that was being witnessed in Shivraj Patil's native village of Chakur, 25 km from Latur, came crashing down as TV channels flashed news of the announcement of Rajasthan governor Pratibha Patil as the Congress candidate.

"I would have been the happiest person in the world if he had become the President," said Haribai, Patil's 85-year-old aunt. The villagers were visibly upset over throwing terms like "light weight" and "non-performer" at Dada, as Patil is known among the villagers. "Dada is an epitome of secularism and has never hurt anyone in his life," said Motipawale, who is also publisher of Patil's seven books on a variety of subjects from poetry to spirituality. Patil's close friend Mallikarju Mundayya Swami, 72, said, "Right from his childhood he has been honest, forthright, studious, punctual and hardworking." Swami said that Patil lost his mother Yeldudbai when he was only five days old. One of their Muslim neighbours at Tapse-Chincholi in Ausa taluka of Latur came forward to take care of the new-born child.
